Llamada de manera informal el “Davos de Mujeres” por previos participantes, la Cum-bre Global de Mujeres ha desarrollado fama de ser una reunión emocionante, rica en experi-encia y prácticas brindadas por delegadas de alto nivel de todas partes del globo. En su deci-monoveno año, la Cumbre celebra el liderazgo de mujeres del mundo entero reuniendo muje-res de negocios, profesionales y líderes gubernamentales durante tres días de sesiones esti-mulantes diseñadas para explorar estrategias y mejores prácticas que permitan acelerar el progreso económico de las mujeres en todo el mundo.
Treinta y siete Miembros Internacio-nales y organizaciones socias que representan a 380.304 mujeres de seis continentes han pre-confirmado su participación a en esta reunión global de líderes en Chile a realizarse en Mayo próximo.
Chile considerado como uno de los mejores lugares para hacer negocios en América latina, es también el orgulloso anfitrión de la Cumbre Global de Mujeres 2009. Con una economía valorada en el 2007 por ser más competiti-va que países tales como la de Co-rea y España según el “World Competitiveness Yearbo-ok” (Anuario mundial de competi-tividad), Chile es el motor del cre-cimiento de exportación en América latina. Las fortalezas de Chile incluyen políticas a favor de una economía sana, un sistema regulatorio transparente, una fuerza de trabajo culta y buena infraestructura. Su política económica prudente y su actitud abierta hacia el comercio y las inversiones han proporcionado a Chile un crecimiento estable. Chile declara tener el ma-yor número de tratados de libre comercio y acuerdos comerciales bilaterales o regionales del mundo, 57 incluyendo la Unión Europea, TLC USA, Mercosur, China, India, Corea, Japón y México.Michelle Bachelet Jeria, Doctora en Medicina, es la primera mujer Presidenta de Chile, ha tomado un rol activo en formalizar el rol de las mujeres chilenas en la vida pública y económica. Como Presidenta, Bachelet ha asegurado la igualdad de género en los altos cargos de la administración, incluyendo a su propio gabinete. Actualmente, un número importante de mujeres lideran ministerios relevantes en Chile, dando un ejemplo para la región y el mundo. Consecuentemente, se han introducido nuevas leyes para asegurar la igualdad de mujeres en una diversidad de sectores. Las líderes empresariales chilenas, son parte fundamental del futuro crecimiento de la economía del país.

Amigas y amigos, queridos compatriotas que residen fuera de Chile:
Es para mí una gran emoción saludarlos por tercer año consecutivo, cuando alrededor del mundo las colonias chilenas residentes, junto con nuestras representaciones diplomáticas, comienzan a celebrar las Fiestas Patrias.
Cada uno de ustedes, aunque viva a miles y miles de kilómetros de distancia, es parte de la gran familia chilena, y sé muy bien que se sienten vinculados, cercanos y preocupados de lo que pasa en Chile.
También sé lo tremendamente solidarios que son con nuestro país cuando los avatares de la naturaleza afectan con fuerza a esta tierra.

Why Chile?
Chile goes from deserts in the north to the arctic conditions of Tierra del Fuego, and from the majestic Cordillera de Los Andes, with the tallest peak in the Western Hemisphere at 22,000 feet, to the Pacific Ocean. This is one of Latin America’s most open countries, with a stable and attractive market. Its strengths include sound economic policy-making, a transparent regulatory system, an educated workforce and good basic infrastructure. Prudent economic policies and an open attitude toward trade and investment have provided Chile with stable long-term growth.
Since the U.S.-Chile Free Trade Agreement (FTA) came into force on January 1, 2004, bilateral trade between the United States has increased over 154 percent.
Chile ended 2006 ranked as the 28th largest export market for the United States, climbing from 29th place in 2005, 30th place in 2004 and 35th place in 2003. The United States was the top source of Chile’s imports for 2006 and remained the top destination for Chile’s exports.
U.S. exports to Chile in 2006 increased by $4.07 billion over exports in 2003, growing from $2.72 billion to $6.79 billion, or by 150 percent. Chile has also benefited tremendously from the FTA; U.S. imports from Chile grew from $3.71 billion in 2003 to $9.56 billion in 2006, an increase of 158 percent.
Chile’s economy grew by 4.3 percent in 2006. The Central Bank of Chile projects 2007 GDP growth of over 5 percent.
Chile has maintained a low rate of inflation, with GDP growth coming from high copper prices, solid export earnings (particularly forestry, fishing, and mining), and growing domestic consumption. Chile continues to attract foreign direct investment, but most foreign investment goes into gas, water, electricity, and mining. Unemployment has exhibited a downward trend over the past year, dropping to 7.8% at the end of 2006. Chile also signed or ratified a number of trade agreements in 2006, including with China and India. Chile claims to have more bilateral or regional trade agreements than any other country. It has 57 such agreements (not all of them full free trade agreements), including with Chilean government bidding procedures.
